The village elders predicted a rigorous winter, and therefore the villagers agreed to work together to ensure that the village has all the necessities. In a spirit of healthy competition, the villagers have decided to measure themselves to see who can be the most useful. However, Rabbit, the constant joker, decided that he did not want to work. Instead, he decided to confuse everyone so that he can take all the resources for himself.
Winter Rabbit takes place in the world of traditional stories of Cherokees animals, where each player embodies one of the animal characters. In this semi-cooperative game, players cooperate to provide everything the village needs for winter while fighting to see who can contribute the most.
Winter Rabbit has a single hidden workers' placement system. The villagers are randomly fired in a bag. The active player knows which villagers he pulled and can choose where to place it, although this information is hidden from other players. Resources are only generated when enough villagers are present. When resources are produced, each player gets one, but those with villagers present earn additional resources.
The Villagers of Rabbits do not produce resources. When one of them appears in a location of resources, the resources are rather diverted to the rabbit burrow. In the following laps, players can steal these resources.
Players can spend resources to build their personal engine through village cards. They can also spend resources on stories that affect the game for all players, or perform tasks that score points, advance the game and provide an advantage to another player.
Players are encouraged to manage resources carefully. Storage is limited, and overproduction can lead to difficulties in producing resources in future turns.
The game ends after a variable number of laps, depending on the number of players. If the players have collectively produced enough provisions for the village to survive winter, then the player with the highest score wins. If winter arrives before the necessary supplies are produced, then players share a collective loss.
Winter Rabbit tries to create a counterpoint to the current themes of the colonial game by focusing on indigenous values and concepts. Winter Rabbit won the second prize for the Zenobia Awards 2021.
