In Making Monsters, players take on the role of mad scientists who compete in the Monster Maker Science Fair, where only the most brilliant and bizarre creations earn prestige and fame.

Each round, players secretly choose how many piece of monsters to command—hoping to outsmart their rivals and gather the right materials. Then, through a build-a-bag mechanic, players simultaneously draw and assemble monster parts, trying to complete powerful creatures before their lab experiments collapse. Build too cautiously and you fall behind, but push too far and your monster can collapse spectacularly.

Completed monsters reward points and special upgrades when revived, and each adds to a growing array of increasingly crazy and strategic upgrade and prestige point options. Players can also earn power-ups from their helpful robotic assistant, Lester, and manipulate the science fair to gain an advantage in future rounds.

At the end of the game, the science fair culminates in a Grand Finale: a final simultaneous challenge where each player chooses their five favorite monsters from their laboratory and attempts to build them with their remaining resources. Success brings prestige; Failure can be costly. This is a final test of Strategy, of memory and risk management, as players race to complete their ultimate teams of monsters before the fair ends.
