Hubris: Twilight of the Hellenistic World puts players in the shoes of the Hellenistic kings of the 2nd century BC, heirs to the famous successors who fought the empire of Alexander the Great for over 40 years, until their decline. The world they live in is different in many ways because, under the Macedonian kings, the Eastern Mediterranean saw a boom in urban life and an unprecedented sharing and cross-fertilization of culture, but the dominant theme remains great power rivalries and endemic warfare.
In those years, even though the great kingdoms of the Lagids (Ptolemies), Seleucids and Antigonid Macedonia had been established for 80 years or more, power remained a very personal enterprise, with everything revolving around the king, and he himself having to rely on his entourage of family members, childhood friends and veteran advisors to direct the affairs of state, whether leading armies, undertaking diplomatic missions or govern provinces.
