City of the Great Machine is a game Strategy which takes place in a dark universe of Victorian technocratic steampunk. The game presents the conflict between the Great Machine, a network of artificial intelligence, and an alliance of heroes. The big machine is either player controlled or automated, which completely changes the game.
The great machine controls a city built on moving platforms in the sky. As a great machine, the player (or the game's AI) commands a force of advanced servants and mechanical guards. The Great Machine's ultimate goal is to suppress social unrest and complete its grandiose master plan for perfecting the human race.
The other players are heroes working together against the great machine to start a revolution. They encourage discontent in the city, enlist the support of famous citizens, and stir up riots. They also attempt to prevent the Great Machine from completing the Master Plan, as this leads to the enslavement of the human race.
Game Features
- City of the Great Machine can be played in One vs. Many (2 to 4 players) or cooperative/single player (1 to 3 players) mode.
- The modular board allows for endless layouts of cities. Players can reposition city districts during gameplay.
- Hidden movement. Each turn, the heroes secretly choose which districts they will go to.
- Resource management. Both parties to the conflict have several actions to take and pay for them in Trust (Hero) or Obligations (the Great Machine). The same is true for movement and other tasks.
- Asymmetrical gameplay and unique victory conditions. The heroes need 3 riots to win, while the great machine works to complete the master plan.
- Secret. The heroes must conceal their plans from the Great Machine, however, they can only discuss their intentions in the presence of the Great Machine.
