More than seventy years later, and the divisions are even deeper than the straits that separate the Republic of China (ROC) from the People's Republic of China (PRC). Times have changed significantly since the PRC failed to conquer the island of Taiwan from the Nationalist Republic of China at the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, and states that were already separated by politics and economics have grown further apart as both sides now scream men, weapons, and materiel into the maelstrom of modern combat in an attempt to settle their bitter division once and for all.

Next War: Taiwan, the next volume in GMT's Next War game series and the sequel to Next War: Korea, allows players to wage a war in the near future on and around the island of Taiwan. In this aftermath, the PRC's communist leadership decided that it was time to put an end to its rhetoric and posturing and bring the long-democratically governed island of Taiwan back into the fold of the Harmonious Socialist Society.

Due to the nature of the "terrain" surrounding Taiwan, the game features an expanded, but still abstract and playable, naval system, including submarine threats, LASM, mine warfare, and anti-naval strikes. Additionally, rules exist for combining Next War: Taiwan with Next War: Korea to simulate an extended conflict.

Note: The Next War series is not an introductory war game. Rather, we intend here to create a system (and series) that will allow for a detailed study of modern warfare in various locations as well as engaging gameplay. That said, the standard game rules encompass a fairly simple set of rules that we believe will be considered fairly "easy to learn" by experienced players. So players who choose to play standard game scenarios can have a relatively fast-paced game when that's what suits them. The true flavor of theater warfare, however, comes in advanced play, where you gain much more control over air power and can see each side's strengths and weaknesses more clearly. For players who want a "monster mini-game" experience, playing the advanced game campaign scenarios with some or all of the optional rules will definitely be "successful".

Ownership of Next War: Korea will NOT be required to play.
