Dark times threaten the kingdom of Thebes. The old blind king Oedipus left the throne in disgrace and asked Polyneices and Eteocles, his own sons, to rule the city together. But power corrupts and old feuds call for new blood to be shed. Soon, Polynices finds himself leading an army from the rival city of Argos against his own brother. Theban nobles support Eteocles as he maintains a precarious reign over Thebes. The young king calls on the defenders to occupy the seven city gates, while the invaders' seven champions lead the attack on the gates. Meanwhile, Thebes' famous citadel, Cadmea, is in disarray. It’s as if the Fates themselves have aligned everything against the current rulers of Thebes!
As the common people prepare for war, the noble families whisper among themselves that the time for a new leadership has arrived, and the time to rebuild Cadmea is now!
In Thebai, players assume the role of influential leaders from noble families during the Late Bronze Age. Throughout the game, players are tasked with rebuilding Cadmea, the citadel of Thebes, while restoring the city's exports, praying to the city gods, and protecting the lives of the citizens as the great heroes shed their blood outside the gates.
The game lasts 10 rounds, each divided into an action phase and a destiny phase. During the action phase, players use a citizen die, then move their Archon onto the Cadmea. During the destiny phase, players can gain additional scoring opportunities, based on their achievements and for protecting the city gates. After the final score, the player with the most victory points is the winner.
