DESCRIPTION

Downfall is a game with two players on the conquest of the third Reich during the Second World War. One player controls the Western allies and the other the Soviet Union in their joint effort to destroy the axis. Although the two players share the goal of defeating the Reich, everyone is looking for a victory that promotes their domination in post-war Europe. To this end, each player controls two factions:

The Western player commands the faction of Western allies and the OKH faction, that is to say the German and minor armies of the axis fighting the Soviet Union in the East (Oberkommando des Heeres).

The Soviet player commands the Soviet faction and the OKW faction, that is to say the German and Italian armies against the Western allies to the west (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht).

The gameplay is controlled by the Innovative Downfall initiative. The faction with the initiative chooses an order, pays its initiative cost by advancing its marker along the track and executes the order. Then, the faction with the initiative (based on the updated positions of the markers) chooses the following order. There is no defined game sequence; The expenditure of the initiative determines which will be the next one. The progression of faction markers along the track also triggers strategic events, meteorological changes and the progress of playing.

Orders include the operational orders used to move units and initiate combat orders and general orders for recruitment, mechanization, partisan war, logistics and strategic war.

Strategic event cards manage game mechanisms such as air support, supply controls, reinforcements, upgrades and distribution of action cards.

Action cards represent unique capacities at each faction and can be played to increase orders or obtain benefits in combat.

The fall began at the high waters of the expansion of the axis in November 1942 and ended in May 1945 at the capitulation of Germany. Players control land units, air units, supporters, fleets and submarines in this titanic struggle. With the two players at the head of factions on opposite fronts, everyone is constantly challenged to launch offensives and lead desperate defenses. On the eastern front, the greatest earth war in history extends from Stalingrad to Berlin; In the West, earth war, naval operations, amphibious invasions and strategic war are combined in the quest for victory.

Chad Jensen did research and experienced Downfall over a period of ten years, inspired by classic strategic games of the Second World War and incorporating ideas from his Fighting Training Initiative System to reach the design approach to four factions and two fronts. John Butterfield resumed design where Chad had left him, leading him to his end.
