This is the spirit of the award -winning Small World by Philippe Keyaerts, and the 2011 version of Small World Underground is an autonomous game that keeps this intact spirit, while giving a new spin to the game.

Small World Underground includes 15 breeds of creatures on the theme of fantasy with 21 special powers. Each player will control several creature/power combinations during the game - using expenditure points to write these combinations - and use these creatures to claim control of various underground locations. Certain places contain relics or are designated as "places of power", and the monsters must first be won over before a player can claim these special advantages. At the end of each round, a player scores points for the regions he has, and the player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Small World Underground can be played alone, but can be combined with other Small World. The publisher recommends that players familiarize themselves with Small World before playing Small World Underground.
