When Elsa von Frühlingfeld presented his invention to King Frederik Auguste II of Saxony, people thought it was a hoax. It used the recently isolated uranium element to heat a water jar and used the resulting steam to supply an engine that maintained active uranium via a process that it called "atomization". Its device, the nucleum, inaugurated a new era of energy and prosperity over the following decades. Saxony has gone from a minor regional power to the European science and engineering center. Now, a generation later, factories are always eager for more power, demanding larger and more to build nuclei, more uranium imported from the neighboring country of Bohemia, and railways and power lines built through The country to transport the tamed power of atoms to the major cities of Saxony. Inventors, engineers and industrialists flock to the Saxon Court, competing to be the leader of this new industrial revolution.

Nucleum is a heavy European board game in which players play the role of industrialists who try to succeed during the economic and technological boom of the 19th century in Saxony, fueled by the invention and propagation of the nucleum (a nuclear reactor).

The players earn victory points by developing their networks, building and fueling urban buildings, obtaining contracts and achieving milestones (objectives of random end of part). Each player also obtains unique asymmetrical technologies, giving them special powers when they are unlocked.
